Frequently Asked Questions

What is OptiFer Alpha, and what is it used for?

OptiFer Alpha is a heme iron supplement developed by Volo Healthcare Inc. in Canada, containing 11 mg of elemental iron in the form of Heme Iron Polypeptide (HIP), naturally sourced from non-GMO bovine hemoglobin. Unlike most iron supplements that use non-heme inorganic forms, OptiFer Alpha delivers iron in its natural biological form, the same form found in red meat and animal proteins. It is used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia, particularly for people who experience gastrointestinal side effects from conventional iron supplements. Products are gluten-free and halal certified.

What makes OptiFer Alpha different from standard iron supplements?

The clinically relevant distinction is the absorption pathway. Non-heme iron used in most supplements, including ferrous sulfate, ferrous gluconate, and ferrous bisglycinate, is absorbed via a non-specific transporter that competes with other minerals including calcium and magnesium, reducing absorption and requiring the supplement to be taken away from food and other minerals. Heme iron, by contrast, is absorbed through a dedicated heme-specific receptor in the intestine that no other mineral competes with. Absorption is up to 32 percent higher and is not affected by what you eat or other supplements taken at the same time. The Heme Iron Polypeptide in OptiFer Alpha is manufactured in Sweden by MediTec under full HACCP standards, representing the only full-heme iron product of its type.

Iron supplements can decrease the absorption of drugs such as tetracycline antibiotics, penicillamine, cedinir, chloramphenicol, levothyroxine, levodopa and quinolone antibiotics. Therefore, doses of these medications should be spaced as far as possible. This product may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including testing for blood in stool) possibly causing false test results.
