Description

Our proanthocyanidin-rich formula protects sensitive tissues and organ systems throughout the body from disease-causing free radicals.

Grape seed extract is a rich bioflavonoid which is used for fighting free radicals and maintaining capillary health. It is very similar to pine bark extract, with a high content of proanthocyanidins. Free radicals do damage in the capillaries in two ways:

  • by inactivating a compound called 1-antitripsin, whose role is to restrain the enzymes that break down collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid; and
  • by turning the fats in the cell membranes rancid (lipid peroxidation).

Proanthocyanidins protect both the 1-antitripsin and the lipids by neutralizing the specific types of free radicals most likely to damage them, and may also directly inhibit the damaging enzymes. Collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid make up much of the inner wall and supporting matrix of the capillaries; when they are in good shape, the capillaries stretch to let red blood cells through the tight places and do not let the fluids in the blood leak out.

Proanthocyanidins have shown a marked tendency to accumulate in tissues with high contents of glycosaminoglycans (complex amino sugars), such as capillary walls and skin. This may also apply to cartilage and synovial fluid. Proanthocyanidins have also shown antimutagenic effects in vitro at high concentrations (250 μg/ml). Proanthocyanidins (also known as leucoanthocyanidins and pycnogenols) are a form of polyphenol, which is in turn a form of bioflavonoid. Proanthocyanidins are at least 15 to 25 times more powerful than vitamin E in neutralizing the iron and reactive oxygen species / free radicals that attack lipids.

Grape seed extract is used for its free radical–fighting capabilities, and for a variety of conditions related to capillary health and permeability. It is synergistic with vitamin C, which is more potent and absorbed more rapidly when used together with proanthocyanidins.

Proanthocyanidins present in grape seeds are known to exert anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic, and antiallergic activities; to prevent skin aging; to scavenge oxygen free radicals; and to inhibit the damaging effects of UV radiation from sunlight. They also bond with collagen, the most abundant protein in the body and a key component of skin, gums, bones, teeth, hair, and body tissues.

Proanthocyanidins have been indicated for poor distribution of microcirculatory blood flow in the brain and heart; altered capillary fragility and permeability (in diabetes mellitus); chronic arterial/venous insufficiency in the extremities; altered platelet aggregation and other characteristics of blood flow in capillaries; breakdown in the elastic fibers of the capillaries (collagen and elastin) due to free-radical and enzyme action; microangiopathy of the retina, edema of the lymph nodes, varicose veins, and other symptoms of the problems listed above; the cumulative effects of aging; and reducing the risk of degenerative diseases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is New Roots Herbal, and where is it made?

New Roots Herbal is a Canadian natural health products company founded in 1985 by Peter Wilkes in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec. With over 400 products ranging from probiotics and enzymes to herbal extracts and essential fatty acids, the brand is manufactured entirely in Canada at its cGMP-certified Quebec facility. The company was established with a mission to create safe, effective, and science-grounded natural remedies for improved global health.

What is New Roots Herbal and is it a trustworthy Canadian supplement brand?

New Roots Herbal is a 100% Canadian family-owned supplement company founded in 1985 by Peter Wilkes in Quebec, starting with probiotics and growing into one of Canada's leading natural health product manufacturers. Its 127,000 sq. ft. cGMP-certified facility in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, houses an ISO 17025-accredited in-house laboratory staffed by 22 scientists, investing over 600 hours per week in raw material and product testing for identity, purity, and potency. The company has been advancing Canadian supplement science for over 40 years.

What makes New Roots Herbal different from other Canadian supplement brands?

The defining differentiator is New Roots Herbal's in-house ISO 17025-accredited laboratory, independently certified since 2014. ISO 17025 is the international standard for testing and calibration laboratories and goes beyond GMP manufacturing compliance to formally certify the competency of the testing laboratory itself. The facility is staffed by 22 scientists holding MSc or BSc degrees from Canadian and European universities, and every product is verified on-site for identity, purity, and potency. This level of internal laboratory infrastructure is rare among supplement brands, which typically rely on external contract labs for quality testing.

How is New Roots Herbal different from other Canadian natural health brands?

New Roots Herbal operates an ISO 17025-accredited internal laboratory — the same accreditation standard used by government reference labs and pharmaceutical QC facilities — rather than outsourcing testing to third parties. With 22 scientists and over 600 hours per week of testing, its analytical depth is closer to a mid-size pharmaceutical company than a typical supplement maker. Founded specifically around probiotics in 1985, it was developing probiotic products nearly two decades before probiotics became a mainstream supplement category in Canada, giving it a depth of formulation experience few competitors can match.
