The gut is home to trillions of bacteria that influence how we digest food, absorb nutrients and respond to unwanted microorganisms. Diet, stress, travel and medications can all disrupt this balance. Natren addresses this with the Trenev Process®, a proprietary oil matrix delivery system. Each strain is individually micro-enrobed in oil, which arrests its growth and shields it from gastric acid. According to Natren, independent testing by a European institute showed virtually 100% survivability for over one hour at a pH as low as 1.8. Because the oil is not broken down by gastric juices but emulsified by bile, the bacteria are released where they are needed — in the small and large intestines.

Bifidobacterium bifidum (Malyoth strain), the dominant strain at 20 billion CFU, is a key resident of the large intestine. Bifidobacteria ferment carbohydrates into acetic and lactic acids, lowering intestinal pH and creating an environment less favourable to unwanted bacteria. They also contribute to the production of B vitamins.

Lactobacillus acidophilus (NAS strain) primarily colonizes the small intestine. It produces lactase, the enzyme that breaks down milk sugar, and human studies have shown that L. acidophilus can improve lactose digestion in lactose maldigesters. L. acidophilus also produces hydrogen peroxide and natural antimicrobial substances, and competes with undesirable microorganisms for attachment sites on the intestinal lining. Laboratory studies have shown inhibitory activity against Candida albicans, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Helicobacter pylori.

Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (LB-51 strain) is a transient, highly proteolytic strain. It helps break down proteins into free-form amino acids, which may aid digestion and mineral absorption, and it produces natural antimicrobial compounds such as bulgarican.

Why only three strains? Probiotic bacteria do not naturally coexist in a capsule — mixed strains compete for survival and can inhibit each other's growth. Natren therefore combines a maximum of three organisms and keeps each one separately enrobed, so that all three arrive intact and non-competitive. Together they cover the small intestine (L. acidophilus), the large intestine (B. bifidum) and transient digestive support (L. bulgaricus).
