What is Suncoat?

Suncoat is a Canadian natural beauty brand founded in 2002 by polymer and organic chemist Yingchun Liu in Guelph, Ontario. Created as a safe alternative for her seven-year-old daughter, Suncoat developed a water-based nail polish that replaces all chemical solvents with water — free from formaldehyde, toluene, acetates, phthalates, and alcohol. All products are formulated and manufactured in-house at the Guelph facility. The brand also includes SuncoatGirl, a dedicated product line for children.

What makes Suncoat different from other nail polish brands?

Conventional nail polish uses toluene, acetates, and other chemical solvents as its carrier base — the source of the harsh odor and much of the toxicological concern. Suncoat replaces this entire solvent system with water, making the formula approximately 70% water and virtually odorless. This is not an incremental reduction of individual harmful ingredients; it is a fundamentally different chemistry pioneered by a polymer chemist who redesigned the formulation from first principles. The result is a nail product that can be safely used in enclosed spaces and applied by children without the off-gassing concerns associated with solvent-based polishes.
