Smoking is a well-known risk factor for respiratory issues and can have detrimental effects on lung health. While quitting smoking is the most crucial step to improve lung function, certain supplements can provide additional support to mitigate the harmful effects of smoking. In today's blog, we will explore a range of supplements to promote lung health for smokers. These supplements, when combined with a healthy lifestyle, can help strengthen the respiratory system, reduce inflammation, and support overall well-being.

CanPrev, Healthy Lungs, 90 Capsules
‍‍Healthy Lungs is an advanced multi-antioxidant formula aimed at preventing cellular damage to lung tissue caused by exposure to airborne pollutants or cigarette smoke.‍‍   ‍‍Healthy Lungs provides a blend of specific antioxidants that can help counteract free radical damage to promote healthy lung function.   ‍‍Healthy Lungs is a source of antioxidants for the maintenance of healthy lung function and a factor in the maintenance of good health.‍‍ ‍

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is an amino acid derivative that acts as a precursor to glutathione, a potent antioxidant naturally produced in the body. Glutathione helps protect lung tissue from damage and aids in clearing mucus.

CanPrev, NAC Liposomal, 225ml
What are liposomals? Liposomal supplements envelop your active ingredients in a bubble of phospholipids – the same stuff our cell walls are made from. Because of its unique biological properties, it’s an exciting new way to administer nutrients. Unlike other supplement forms, you don’t have to worry about how long it takes for your nutrients to be absorbed.   NAC Liposomal provides antioxidants. NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) is known as a mucolytic agent. It’s also a precursor to glutathione – a critical antioxidant for immune, liver and brain health. Glutathione helps scavenge free radicals and protect our cells from damage. NAC is also ideal for individuals who want protection against oxidative stress caused by respiratory conditions. Delicious strawberry taste.   Bubble of protection Liposomes envelop active nutrients in a bubble of phospholipids, shielding against digestive hazards, enzymes and absorption-blocking substances.   Fantastic cell reception Phospholipid layers are built from the same material as cells, vastly enhancing permeability, absorption rate by epithelial cells, and rapid uptake into our blood or lymphatic system.   Rapid, sustained release A unique multilamellar design features multiple rings of phospholipid membranes. Nutrient payloads are released as each layer is peeled away, allowing a sustained delivery of compounds over time.   CanPrev Liposomals use a patented delivery system that swiftly and safely transports active nutrients direct-to cell. Bio-friendly phospholipid bilayers protect nutrients in transit from digestive and enzymatic breakdown, while supporting quick sustained cellular uptake. With soy-free phospholipids sourced from sunflower and phosphatidylcholine. No artificial colours, flavours, preservatives or animal products. Delicious vanilla citrus flavour.

NAC has been extensively studied in relation to lung conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and bronchitis, with encouraging results. A meta-analysis published in the European Respiratory Review in 2015, analyzed 13 studies involving 4155 COPD patients showed that patients treated with NAC had significantly fewer exacerbations of chronic bronchitis or COPD compared to those who did not receive NAC. NAC was well tolerated, and the risk of adverse reactions was not dependent on the dosage.

AOR, NAC, 500mg, 120 Capsules
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, or NAC, is an amino acid that acts as an antioxidant and is a precursor in the body to glutathione (GSH), a critical antioxidant. NAC is a more stable form of the amino acid cysteine (which is very unstable and oxidizes readily) because it has an acetyl group (CH3CO) attached. NAC is also more bioavailable and 6 times as cost-effective as the tripeptide glutathione. Glutathione consists of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. The body breaks this tripeptide apart before absorption, but the rate limiting (most valuable) amino acid for the purpose of making glutathione is the cysteine. Therefore, simply taking NAC makes much more sense.   Protects the heart Boosts glutathione levels Improves immunity Protects against toxins

Another 12-week randomized controlled trial published in Brazillian Journal of Psychiatry assessed the effectiveness and safety of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as an adjunctive treatment for smoking cessation. The results showed that combining NAC with first-line treatment significantly reduced exhaled carbon monoxide, and decreased soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 2.

Pure Encapsulations, NAC, 900mg, 120 Capsules
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) is a derivative of the dietary amino acid l-cysteine. NAC scavenges free radicals and decreases oxidative stress produced by heavy metals to support antioxidant defence. It is also a precursor to the antioxidant glutathione, and supplemental NAC increases tissue levels of glutathione.   Several animal studies suggest that NAC administration may also help to moderate the effects of mercury and cadmium accumulation in the kidneys and liver. NAC may achieve these actions in part by promoting healthy glutathione levels or protecting tissues from peroxidation generated by heavy metals. NAC also has a high affinity for lung tissue, which it supports through antioxidant action.   Provides 900 mg of NAC per day Convenient once-daily capsule format

Quercetin

Quercetin is a flavonoid, which is a type of plant pigment and phytochemical found in various fruits, vegetables, and grains. It is a natural antioxidant that may help reduce airway inflammation, alleviate allergy symptoms, and support lung health.

New Roots, Quercetin 98%, 500mg, 90 Capsules
Quercetin is a plant-sourced antioxidant compound for the maintenance of good health. Ongoing research proves exciting for the current role of quercetin in global health.   Quercetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid (plant pigment) which is found in many plants including onions, apples, kale, green tea, and multiple species of berries. Its antioxidant activity makes these plants resilient and protects their cells from environmental stressors.   The antioxidant action of quercetin is recognized for numerous human health benefits. Quercetin has a long history of traditional use, with current research showing promise for potential added health benefits.   Consuming quercetin-rich foods is a good start; however, quercetin in supplement form gives an exponentially greater quantity of this critical compound. It delivers an amount which more closely reflects dosage used in current therapeutic research.     Each capsule of New Roots Herbal’s Quercetin contains 500 mg of naturally sourced, potency-validated quercetin.

Quercetin is known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. Smoking increases oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Inflammation plays a significant role in the development and progression of various respiratory diseases, including asthma and COPD. Quercetin has shown potential in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation associated with smoking. It may help protect cells from damage caused by harmful free radicals.

Organika, Quercetin With Bromelain, 500mg, 60 Caplets
Say good-bye to allergies with Quercetin plus Bromelain form Organika. Containing a 400 mg potency of the important flavonoid Quercetin plus, 100 mg of Bromelain. Best known for their anti-inflammatory properties, Quercetin with bromelain has the unique ability to help soothe inflamed nasal passages due to allergies and gently provide relief. Ideal for those who suffer from seasoanl allergies.   Helpful for seasonal allergies. Natural anti-inflammatory support. With Bromelain. Derived from citrus source. Antioxidants and antihistamine properties.   Quercitin is a bioflavinoid that acts as an antioxidant, antihistamine and anti-inflammatory, in addition to its vascular effects.  It stabilizes the membranes of mast cells.  Mast cells release histamine when they come into contact with an allergen so that the body mounts an immune response.  It is this immune response that is responsible for allergic symptoms such as runny nose and itchy watery eyes. Bioflavinoids are essential for the absorption of vitamin C.  The body cannot produce them; rather they must be taken in through the diet.  They are called vitamin P because they regulate the Permeability of vessels and increase vessel strength.  They are used to treat injuries because they repair damaged capillaries, which allows the body to restore proper blood flow to the area.  Thus pain is relieved and bruising is minimized.  They work with vitamin C to kill bacteria, increase circulation, stimulate bile flow, lower cholesterol, prevent cataracts and prevent herpes outbreaks.   The bromelains are a group of naturally occurring protein-digestive (proteolytic) enzymes.  They are found in the stem of the pineapple.  Other components of the stem, including various enzymes and calcium, are also present in commercial bromelain preparations.  Besides being used as a protein digestive aid, the enzymes in bromelain inhibit inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins.  The anti-inflammatory effect has been studied for its effectiveness in inflammatory conditions like arthritis and sinusitis. In order to get substantial amounts of bromelain from pineapple you must eat the fibrous stem, therefore it is much easier to use a supplement form.  Bromelain can be purchased in capsules.  Enteric-coated capsules limit the use of bromelain in food digestion.  They have been studied, with mixed results, for anti-inflammatory conditions.  Bromelain is found as a component of digestive, multi-enzyme or anti-inflammatory formulas.

A study from Theraeutic Advances in Respiratory Disease concluded that quercetin summarized several studies that demonstrated the positive therapeutic potential of quercetin in cigarette smoking–induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (CS-COPD) due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, quercetin's immunomodulatory, anti-cellular senescence, mitochondrial autophagy-modulating, and gut microbiota-modulating effects may also hold therapeutic value for CS-COPD.

Westcoast Naturals, Quercetin with Bromelain, 50 Caplets
Westcoast Naturals features the unique combination of Quercetin and Bromelain – two key ingredients that work well together. Quercetin functions on an antioxidant level to reduce damage and irritation caused by free radicals while suppressing your body's reaction to allergens. Bromelain functions on an enzymatic and protein level by limiting the action of metabolites and neutrophils on inflammation. It also assists in increasing your body's absorption and utilization of Quercetin.   Commonly used as a medicine, Quercetin is a potent flavonoid that is found in many plant-based foods. This famous flavonoid has been studied rigorously for its antiviral, antihistamine and hypertension regulating properties. Our formula of Quercetin is combined with Bromelain, which aids in the absorption of Quercetin in the body.   Quercetin with Bromelain helps suppress the body’s reaction to allergens to provide relief of allergy symptoms.

Another animal study published on Journal of Basic and Clinical Physiology and Pharmacology revealed that quercetin reduced the risk of nicotine dependence and has a potential effect to use as a therapy for nicotine dependence, especially as a preventive agent.

Vitamin C

Known for its powerful antioxidant properties, Vitamin C plays a crucial role in maintaining lung health. It helps protect the lungs against oxidative stress caused by environmental pollutants and supports immune function.

Natural Traditions, Camu C, 90 Capsules
A traditional superfruit prized by the indigenous people of the Amazon. Natures richest source of whole food vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the body to metabolize fats and proteins. Vitamin C helps in the development and maintenance of bones, cartilage, teeth, gums and helps in connective tissue formation and wound healing. A host of antioxidants such as anthocyanins, flavonols and ellagic acid. No fillers, flavours or sweeteners added.

Studies have shown that smokers have lower levels of vitamin C in their lungs compared to non-smokers, which may contribute to increased oxidative stress and lung damage. Supplementation with vitamin C has been found to reduce the oxidative damage caused by smoking, as well as improve lung function and decrease the risk of developing respiratory symptoms.

The analysis of combined results indicated a significant association between higher vitamin C intake levels and reduced risk of lung cancer compared to lower levels. Additionally, a linear dose-response relationship was observed, showing a 7% decrease in the risk of lung cancer for every 100 mg/day increase in vitamin C intake.

SISU, Ester-C Supreme, 120 Capsules
‍‍Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant and one of the best researched nutrients. Most mammals can produce vitamin C as they need it but the human system evolved without this ability, therefore we must ensure an adequate daily intake to stay healthy. Vitamin C is found in fruits and vegetables, but it is easily destroyed by heat, cooking, processing, and storage, and rapidly eliminated from our system in the urine. Inadequate levels of vitamin C may be seen in cases of physical and mental stress, older people and those with chronic conditions including cardiovascular disease, asthma, arthritis and age-related eye disease. Vitamin C is best known for strengthening the immune system by supporting and improving white blood cell function. It is also essential for the proper formation of collagen, the building block of many tissues and a crucial component in skin rejuvenation. Vitamin C also helps to reduce histamine release in the body, thereby alleviating allergy symptoms. There are numerous forms of vitamin C with ascorbic acid being the most basic. People wanting a clinically proven form that is easier on the system than ascorbic acid may choose a form like Ester-C® brand calcium ascorbate.‍‍
